About MAAW

About Mount Alexander Animal Welfare (MAAW)

We are a passionate team of qualified staff and volunteers who run MAAW’s animal shelter and op shop. We work with the community to support a range of initiatives that promote the welfare of native wildlife and domestic animals. We are a not-for-profit small charity governed by an elected committee.

Our story

From Closure to Community

One door closed, and another opened... When the Castlemaine Animal Shelter faced closure, the community stepped up, transforming a challenge into Mount Alexander Animal Welfare (MAAW). Through passion and persistence, we’ve built a legacy of care, growth, and resilience.

Over the years, MAAW has achieved incredible milestones: purchasing the shelter, securing vital funding, building a state-of-the-art cattery, and launching critical upgrades—all powered by community donations and our thriving op shop.

Today, we continue to improve and expand, ensuring our shelter remains a safe, welcoming place for animals and staff alike.

MAAW Committee

The Role of the MAAW Committee

The MAAW committee guides our operations, from the op shop to the shelter and animal welfare programs. United by a passion for animals, they set our values, ethical principles, and strategic direction to ensure everything aligns with MAAW’s vision and purpose.

As volunteers, their role focuses on ensuring tasks are completed by staff and volunteers, while remaining accountable for the organisation’s activities and decisions. Their leadership is vital to our community impact.
